Lucy was discharged from the Stem Cell Transplantation Unit of the University Hospital in Gent on Saturday morning 23 January. This was one day after her birthday and one day short of three weeks. We were told that each patient differs, but not to expect an admission of less than three weeks and quite frankly it could be more like four weeks. We were expecting four.
She made phenominal progress in the last week she was there, so it was decided she would be discharged to begin her two-month home recuperation period.
Since she has been home, she has had two weekly check-ups at the Hematology Day Clinic. There they do a full blood screening, general health assessment and follow up on any issues that developed duing the hospitalization or that have manifested after her hospitalization.
During her hospitalization she developed fluid around her heart. A follow-up echocardigram showed no change so they are continuing to monitor that situation. After her discharge she developed a lung infection which is currently being treated by oral antibiotics. If this does not work she will have to receive IV antibiotics.
She still stuggles with not being able to eat and drink as much as is needed. Her appetite is increasing and that will help with overall health. She will begin a home fitness routine soon.
At her last check up on 3 Feb she had a white blood cell count of 3,600, platelets over 10,000 and nutraphil count around 1000. This indicates the bone marrow is redeveloping and beginning to function. For now she will continue weekly check ups on Wednesdays.
We are hoping she may be released from home recovery around the first of April.
